Born in cable assembly
Why POM knows cable assembly.
POM was created at Powertune Spezialkabelsysteme GmbH & Co. KG – a cable assembly company with more than 150 employees. A harness there consists of wires, terminals, seals, conduits and labels; every item has its own lead time, every customer their own variants and drawing revisions.
In many companies, the knowledge of how a terminal is crimped onto a wire lives in heads and binders. In POM MES, wires, terminals and seals are catalogues, complemented by leadsets and crimp standards with values such as crimp height, pull-off force and strip length. Every catalogue can be imported via CSV – repeatably, so it stays current.
In the control station, orders move from the pool to a capable machine, in a sequence that puts similar configurations one after another. That means fewer set-ups. The machine client shows each machine its own order queue, and the feedback produces OEE per machine.
On top of that comes everything else that defines cable assembly: qualifications per person and work step, first articles released only with proof, batches from goods receipt to delivery – and piecework and homework, settled in the same system from the same employee master data.

How an order runs through POM.

Enquiry and quote
The enquiry gets an owner and a response deadline, costing provides the price, and the enquiry becomes the quote without retyping.

Order and material
The quote becomes the order. Missing wires, terminals and seals appear in the order proposal, and goods receipt is checked.

Planning and control station
Planning distributes the operations across people and weeks; in the control station every machine gets a set-up-optimised sequence.

Production and proof
At the terminal, work is started, stopped and quantities are reported. First articles need proof, inspection plans record measured values, batches stay traceable.

Pay, shipping and invoice
Piecework and homework flow into the monthly list, shipping prints label and parcel number, and the invoice goes out as an e-invoice and on to accounting.

Crimp standards describe the values used to crimp a combination of terminal, wire and, where needed, seal – such as crimp height, pull-off force and strip length – and with which tool. POM MES keeps them as a catalogue with repeatable CSV import, so the set-up knowledge stays in the system.
Can POM settle piecework in cable assembly?
Yes. POM Piecework keeps piece rates with price per piece and target time, monthly lists per employee with carry-over, and homework planning. Employees come from the shared employee master data – nobody is entered twice.
Are the machines connected automatically?
Today the machine client shows each machine its own order queue, and feedback comes via shop floor data capture. Automatic machine connectivity through interfaces such as OPC UA or MQTT is planned and not part of today’s scope.
Can existing master data be imported?
Wires, terminals, seals, leadsets and crimp standards can be imported via CSV, and the import is repeatable. For orders, POM Integration offers CSV import and export as well as file and REST interfaces.
