The challenges
What it really hinges on here.
- 01
Every order is a project: mechanics, electrics, assembly, testing
- 02
Purchased parts with weeks of lead time dictate the sequence
- 03
Whether the quote carried the project shows up months later
Single units and small series
When every order is a project.
In machine building, one order rarely resembles the last. A special-purpose machine passes through mechanics, electrics, assembly and testing, often over months and across several departments. In POM, a freely definable workflow maps these stages, and the order overview shows the process chain and progress of every order. With POM Collaboration, questions between electrics and assembly hang on the order as messages, and tasks carry an owner and a due date.
Purchased parts often set the pace: a gearbox, a controller, a drive with weeks of lead time. In POM Warenwirtschaft, request for quotation, purchase order and blanket order run in the same system as the order; purchase order monitoring shows what is outstanding. Open orders reserve what their bill of materials needs, and the stock list separates reserved from free quantities. In incoming invoices, 3-way matching checks prices against the purchase order and quantities against what was delivered.
Time is booked where the work happens. At the POM BDE terminal, fitters and electricians scan the production order and their personnel number; every booking lands on the operation, and a finished operation unlocks the next. POM Resources keeps machines, fixtures and gauges with service intervals and an hourly rate that is frozen when each booking ends. Due maintenance appears on the Today dashboard and where planning happens.
POM Costing shows whether the quote carried the project as soon as the hours are booked. Beforehand, you calculate according to your scheme with material, labour, machine rates and overheads; releasing the costing freezes times and material costs. Post-calculation sets the planned times against the hours actually booked in BDE. Before the next similar quote you know where more hours were needed than planned – instead of sensing it months later.

One machine, many trades
From quote to post-calculation.
- 01
Quote with costing
The costing scheme calculates material, labour, machine rates and overheads. Scenarios put variants side by side; the quote is a sales document from which the order confirmation is created.
- 02
Parts and bill of materials
Open orders reserve what their bill of materials needs. Whatever is missing you order from within POM, blanket orders included; purchase order monitoring shows open deliveries, and goods receipt is inspected.
- 03
Planning across trades
On the Gantt board you distribute mechanics, electrics, assembly and testing across employees and weeks. Approved leave reduces capacity, and machine service dates are visible in the plan.
- 04
Assembly with time booking
Every employee books at the terminal against the operation they are working on. Finished operations unlock the next; questions stay on the order as messages.
- 05
Delivery and post-calculation
Delivery note and invoice come from the document chain, with commercial invoice and packing list for shipments abroad. Post-calculation then compares plan and booked hours.
What POM brings to your industry
Operations and dependencies planned realistically, purchased parts from purchase order to goods receipt in the same system, hours booked against the order, and post-calculation that tells you the truth about the quote.
Quick answers
Questions from practice.
Is POM suitable for one-off production with long lead times?
Yes, if you run the order as a sequence of operations. The workflow defines the stages, such as mechanics, electrics, assembly and testing; on the Gantt board you plan them across weeks and employees, with capacity per employee and day. With POM BDE, finished operations unlock the next, and the order overview shows progress at any time.
We ship machines abroad – what does POM handle in export?
POM Shipping detects domestic, EU or non-EU per shipment, checks the customs master data for completeness and creates the commercial invoice and packing list. POM Customs & Trade Compliance turns this into an export process per delivery note, with packages, a manually checked export control and a release. POM does not create the official export declaration; it prepares the data for your customs agent or forwarder and archives MRN and exit confirmation.
How do I find out whether an order made money?
With POM Costing and POM BDE. The costing sets times and material costs in advance, and releasing it freezes them. At the terminal, employees book their hours against the operations; post-calculation finds these bookings through the production order number and sets them against the plan. POM Resources freezes the equipment’s hourly rates when each booking ends, so a later rate change does not shift past costs.
Does POM connect our machines directly?
Not today. Automatic machine data via interfaces such as OPC UA or MQTT is on the roadmap, and POM MES is built for cable assembly today. In machine building, employees capture times and quantities with POM BDE at the terminal, by hand scanner or by typing; POM Resources keeps machines, fixtures and tools with their service intervals.
How do purchasing and assembly coordinate in POM?
With POM Collaboration. A message hangs on the order it concerns and can go to individual users, to a role or to a department – from assembly to purchasing, for example. Whatever needs doing becomes a task with an owner and a due date; unread messages and due tasks appear on the Today dashboard. Months later, the whole exchange is still on the order.
